Greater Montreal / Island of Montreal
After living in several cities around the world, Tomoko Inui moved from Alaska in 2003 to study at McGill University under the guidance of Kyoko Hashimoto. In 2004, she received McGill University’s Bruneau Prize for her outstanding solo recital. She contributes actively to Montréal’s musical scene, both as a soloist and through chamber‑music performances. She also appears in Montréal’s Accès culture program. She has worked as a collaborative pianist at Queen’s University, as an organist at St‑Arsène Church, and as a pianist for the West Island Lyric Opera.
Tomoko has a deep affection for chamber music. She performed with the Alexander String Quartet in Florence, Italy, in 2008. She has also taken part in several international competitions, notably in the Czech Republic (2003) and in Germany (2010–2012), where she attended masterclasses and advanced training programs. During the summers of 2014 and 2015, she worked with Concerts for Peace in Liesing (Vienna), Austria.
She has recorded several works by Mozart, Chopin, Ravel, and Rachmaninoff with recording engineer Meining Cheung. She does not hesitate to propose projects that step outside the ordinary: for example, she has already put her improvisational talents to use during the Journées de la culture, in a concert where the audience is invited to create theatrical scenes inspired by the music being performed.
She holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in solo piano performance from McGill University. She also completed a doctorate and worked in oceanography for several years before devoting herself fully to her music.
