Bertin

Benjamin Bertin is a Canadian pianist, a chamber musician, and a teacher based in Montreal. He holds a Doctorate in Piano Performance from the Université de Montréal, where he studied with Paul Stewart, and an Artist Diploma from Columbus State University, where he studied with Alexander Kobrin.

As a dedicated teacher-artist working with piano students from diverse backgrounds, Benjamin has developed a teaching approach that nurtures each individual’s unique gifts while providing a strong technical foundation. Drawing on his own unconventional musical journey, he is committed to helping each student develop a distinctive musical voice and move beyond perceived limitations, both internal and external.

Benjamin has a particular talent for working with advanced pianists as they prepare for competitions, recitals, and auditions. He helps students refine their interpretations by providing precise musical feedback that draws attention to the essential details of the music. During his doctoral studies at the Université de Montréal, he served as a teaching assistant and studio assistant to his professor, Paul Stewart. His students have achieved excellent results in Royal Conservatory examinations, competitions and festivals such as the Canadian Music Competition, university music auditions (B.Mus. and M.Mus.), and numerous performances.

Before moving to Montreal, Benjamin taught piano in the Music Preparatory Division at Clayton State University and served as a judge for competitions such as the Alabama MTNA Piano Competition.

Mr. Bertin’s specialization in the music of Nikolai Medtner has earned him numerous awards and scholarships, as well as invitations to perform and give lecture-recitals in Canada, the United States, and Portugal. Following the successful completion of his doctoral dissertation on Medtner’s Op. 25 sonatas, Mr. Bertin contributed to the book Medtner: Music, Aesthetics, and Contexts, published in 2021 by Olms Verlag in Hildesheim, Germany.

He has participated in master classes with Byron Janis, Christopher Elton, and Artur Pizarro, among others. A dedicated chamber musician and duo partner, Bertin has collaborated with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and Bang on a Can All-Stars in projects spanning five centuries of music, from Boulez, Crumb, and Reich to Monteverdi.
