History of Canada Music Week

Canada Music Week was established in 1960 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations. The event was so successful that the following year, the CFMTA Executive decided to turn it into an annual celebration of Canadian music. 

Objectives

The objectives of CMW include creating public awareness of Canadian music, supporting Canadian composers and artists, familiarizing young Canadians with contemporary music, and encouraging music teachers to expand their knowledge of Canadian repertoire.

Entry Fees, all Categories

First category, per person

Ages 11 years and under: $20
Ages 12 to 17 years: $25
Ages 18 and over: $30

Second category or additional family member: $20 regardless of age.

POSTER ART COMPETITION

CFMTA is calling all student artists to submit their artwork to be displayed on the 2024 Canada Music Week® Poster!

Artwork must be an original work of the student, studying with a current CFMTA member and will be open to all students aged 18 and under.

The student should consider the theme “Canadian Geography” in their artwork.

Please submit your artwork, with your name, email, phone number, teacher and province by November 15th 2023.

Suggested size 15 cm x 15 cm (6 inches x 6 inches)

Winning artist will be acknowledged.

Adult Performance Clubs

About the Clubs

  • Teachers invite their adult students at the home of a host, to an informal gathering where they can perform the repertoire of their choice in a friendly atmosphere.

  • There are two clubs: (1) Beginners & Intermediate performers; (2) Advanced performers (Grade 8 RCM and up).

  • Admission is free. Guests each bring a plate to share to eat after the recital.

  • Participants must be comprised exclusively of friend members or students of current active or provisional QMTA members.

  • Reservation is required.

Kids' Club - Santa's Concert
  • Santa's concert is the key event of QMTA's Kids' Club.

  • On the first (or second) Sunday of December, our young musicians are the stars of the show.

  • Santa Claus and the Christmas Elf surprise them with presents.

  • Open to all aged under 18.
